The Race – Fastnet

Alongside the Sydney- Hobart, the Fastnet race is one of the truly iconic yacht races. The race is only held every two years and, despite being the largest by far of the world’s classic 600-mile offshore races in terms of participants, race entry is always massively oversubscribed, making it that much harder to tick off the “bucket list”.
The 47th edition of the Rolex Fastnet Race, organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club, will start in the Solent from Cowes, Isle of Wight, on Sunday 6th August, finishing in Plymouth via the Fastnet Rock, the symbol of the race, located off the southern coast of Ireland.
The Competitors
All 340 of them!
In the first minute, 222 boats entered and by 12:04:24 the 340 boat limited had been reached, which thankfully included the MYC entry.
Entrants from 28 different nations have signed up and include; Great Britain, France (who have dominated the event in the recent years), Netherlands, Germany and USA, with an entry from Korea as well as from Australia and New Zealand. The race has attracted the usual diverse fleet of yachts, from beautiful classics to some of the world’s fastest racing machines – and everything in between, racing in IRC or selected offshore classes such as IMOCA60, VOR65, Class40 and MOCRA Multihull.
Cowes Week
Cowes Week is the largest sailing regatta of its type in the world. It is a key highlight of the British sporting summer and has been held in early August every year since 1826, except during the two world wars.

The regatta has evolved enormously since 1826 and now between 800 and 1,000 boats in up to forty different handicap, one-design and multihull classes race every day for eight days. Around 8,000 competitors now participate, ranging from Olympic and world class yachtsmen to weekend sailors. The spectacle that the racing provides, together with the vibrant festival atmosphere, attracts ver
100,000 visitors to Cowes during the event.
The Yacht

We take possession on 28 July 2017 and return her on 12 August 2017.
Sailplane 1, a Beneteau First 40, designed by Bruce Farr to replace the iconic First 40.7 cruiser/racer, is available for corporate and racing charter at events such Cowes week, Cork week, the JP Morgan Round the Island race and the Rolex Fastnet Race.
She has an extremely good racing history having represented France at the 2010 Commodores Cup. She also has race wins to her name in many inshore and offshore races.
Sailplane is built to a very high specification including Carbon Mast, Carbon Boom, Carbon Rudder and wheel. She boasts a full suit of high tech sails with both symmetrical and asymmetrical spinnakers.

Crew
The boat can take 10 offshore and 12 inshore (i.e. Cowes). We also have the option of taking the yacht’s owner, Rob, in the unlikely event that we don’t get to 10 crew for the Fastnet, but we may be well advised to actively consider taking him for Cowes to gain the benefit of his local knowledge of the Solent.
We have 10 crew confirmed (see table below) with a further one person for Cowes. As far as possible, we want to make this an MYC boat so that we can proudly fly the club burgee.

Importantly, six that have committed have sailed together offshore a number of times and therefore we are confident that we have the beginnings of a happy, harmonious crew that will have fun together, competing successfully and safely.
Muir is the current nominated Person In Charge for the purposes of the charter and race entries but, once we know the final crew list, we can decide together who will fill the usual roles of skipper, navigator, watch leader, etc.
