KVH launches new TracPhone V7HTS for all-in-one connectivity

lang: en_US

KVH has launched a new connectivity solution in what the company is calling a quantum leap in maritime satellite communications. The new TracPhone V7HTS is a mini-VSAT Broadband which provides fast streaming speeds and unlimited data in one single package.

Features include fast data rates, with downloads as fast as 10 Mbps and uploads as fast as 3 Mbps (triple the download speed and six times the upload speed of KVH’s 60 cm antennas on the original mini-VSAT Broadband service), and an unlimited-use data channel. This is available through the inclusion of KVH’s exclusive dual channel configuration, with hybrid airtime plans that deliver a free unlimited-use data channel running at the same time as the user’s ultra-fast channel.

The company also claims that it has the most advanced network of all maritime connectivity providers. The TracPhone V7HTS uses new, advanced Intelsat and SKY Perfect JSAT Ku-band satellites that add HTS capabilities to the mini-VSAT Broadband network. The high-speed worldwide HTS network offers advantages such as 25 million square miles added to KVH’s current Ku-band coverage, greater resilience to weather and rain fade than Ka-band networks, and no fall back onto antiquated L-band satellites due to rain fade or network beam availability issues. Integrated cybersecurity is also offered as well as automatic, fast switching among high-speed network beams, ensuring seamless communications wherever you cruise.

It will certainly be interesting to see how the industry responds to this new product – please post any thoughts in the comments section below!

RORC Season’s Points Championship

Over 500 boats took part in the 2017 RORC Season’s Points Championship, with teams flying the flags of 30 different nations from Canada to Russia and Chile to New Zealand.

Well over 4,000 sailors took part, and whilst the majority of the races were in the English Channel, the Championship included the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, the Celtic Sea, the Mediterranean Sea and the North Sea.

The 13-race series, which this year included the Rolex Fastnet Race, is truly international and it is the largest offshore series by participation, anywhere in the world. For the serious offshore sailor, winning the championship is a real challenge.

Lisa – Overall winner – 2017 RORC Season’s Points Championship
The overall winner of the 2017 RORC Season’s Points Championship is Nick and Suzi Jones’ British First 44.7 Lisa, skippered by RORC Commodore Michael Boyd. The corinthian team retained the title from 2016; the only yacht to achieve the double since Piet Vroon’s Dutch Ker 46 Tonnerre de Breskens (2011-12). Gilles Fournier & Corinne Migraine’s J/133 Pintia was second overall and Thomas Kneen’s JPK 1080 Sunrise was third.

Lisa – 2017 RORC Yacht of the Year
Lisa has also been awarded the RORC Yacht of the Year, winning the Somerset Memorial Trophy for an outstanding racing achievement by a yacht owned or sailed by a RORC member, as voted for by the RORC Committee.

‘This has been a tough season, winning the championship in a Fastnet year makes it even more of a challenge,’ commented Lisa’s Nick Jones. ‘Our goal was to defend our win in 2016 and to be awarded RORC Yacht of the Year is beyond our dreams. Michael (Boyd) has been an inspiration, especially to the young crew, whose energy and tenacity has been fundamental to our success. The youth sailors at the RORC are the future of offshore sailing and we will be using our contacts and experience to help them. Lisa will not be racing next year so it is great to finish the adventure on such a high. Next season, Suzi and I will spend our time with our children; Charlie, Freddie and Toby, teaching them the joys of sailing in Chichester Harbour.’

The impressive fleet for the RORC Season’s Points Championship is separated into six classes racing under IRC, a Class40 Division and a Multihull Class. Two outstanding results from this year’s Championship were in IRC Two Handed and IRC Four.

Bellino – IRC Two Handed and Mixed Two Handed
Rob Craigie’s racing Sun Fast 3600 Bellino with Deb Fish, was the winner of the IRC Two Handed Class. Racing in a fleet of 78 teams, Bellino fended off a strong challenge from Ian Hoddle’s Game On, and Ed Fishwick’s Redshift Reloaded.

‘Game On and Redshift were always at our heels; we couldn’t relax at any moment, in any race,’ commented Craigie. ‘Whilst all three boats are Sun Fast 3600s, there are different keels and rigs, so we all have strengths and weaknesses in different conditions. Deb Fish has been my sailing partner all season. She is very good at the analysis, whilst I am the more experienced seaman, and in terms of boat speed, we are an equal match, so it is a great synergy.’

Foggy Dew – IRC Four
Noel Racine’s French JPK 10.10 Foggy Dew has been in scintillating form, securing the class win in IRC Four in a fleet of 116 boats, with two races to spare. Foggy Dew’s winning streak in the Championship dates back to 2013.

‘Every year we have to start as new; we have changes to the crew and the competitors are different,’ commented Racine. ‘Winning is not about doing one thing well, it is about attention to detail. Preparing the boat, the sails and the equipment, and reacting to changes on the race course. In IRC Four, we race against all different types of boat, but I believe that Foggy Dew is a good all-round performer.’

The Annual Dinner and Prize Giving for the 2017 RORC Season’s Points Championship is a spectacular event where prize winners, competitors, crews, RORC members and guests will celebrate the achievements of 2017.

Maxi Edmond de Rothschild ~ Transat Jacques Vabre

On 17 July 2017, after a twenty-month build and over 35,000 hours of studies, Ariane and Benjamin de Rothschild launched the latest addition to their offshore racing stable.

The Maxi Edmond de Rothschild, a large oceanic trimaran measuring 32 metres long and 23 metres wide is now part of the long and rather illustrious line of Gitanas. This Sunday in Le Havre, Gitana 17 will be the first multihull designed to fly offshore to set sail on a transatlantic race. On-board will be two oceanic pioneers, Sébastien Josse and Thomas Rouxel.

Paving the way

Featuring an aggressive and sleek outline with smooth lines, the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild forces admiration. Indeed, this flying ‘fighter plane’ is a one-off in the looks department thanks to her unique floats and central hull and to the underwater sections of her beams, which are reminiscent of a plane wing. With flat hull bottoms for the maximum lift, a very high freeboard to thwart the torsion stresses of the float foils and rectangular beams for optimum stiffness, her streamlined wing-style sail plan and boat profile blend into one.

Hydrodynamics and aerodynamics have been the key points in the development of this ‘two in one’ craft according to her architect Guillaume Verdier.

From the design to the construction, the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild is the result of a mastery of innovation and new technologies, shaped by the strictest quality control. A precursor, this giant of the seas is paving the way forward for a new generation of large multihulls, designed to negotiate heavy seas in the open ocean.

Video – It was a rather odd carbon bird that was tied to the dock in the Bassin de l’Eure last Friday for the opening of the Transat Jacques Vabre race village. The locals weren’t impervious to her charm!

Objective: apprenticeship and fine-tuning on the finest of playgrounds!

Since the launch of the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild, the timing has been tight and every session on the water has been carefully optimised by the members of the Gitana Team to enable the Edmond de Rothschild duo to set sail from Le Havre with the optimum amount of preparation under their belts. The estimated eight to ten days for the crossing and the numerous associated miles in race configuration are an accelerated learning experience that greatly appeals to Sébastien Josse: “Gitana 17 is a highly specialised prototype, which brings together a series of innovative technologies where there is no shortcut to the discovery and fine-tuning phase! Naturally I’m thinking here about the foils and the various appendages and systems necessary for flight, but that’s not all. Innovation has a place all over the boat. In fact, we’re developing some unique solutions with Pixel sur Mer regarding all the on-board intelligence. With Gitana Team we’re pioneers, we’re preparing the way forward and what we learn from these miles in race configuration is extremely precious for the next stage of the programme and particularly for the single-handed racing in 2018 and 2019.”

The Edmond de Rothschild duo has had a short yet intense period of preparation. However, the two men fully intend to benefit from the 4,350 miles that lay ahead of the latest addition to the Gitana fleet to fine tune her and show off her exceptional potential.

Video – On 17 August 2017, just one month after exiting the yard, the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild enjoyed her debut flight. See the images of this intense moment that is sure to remain etched in our memories.
