VQ54 VANQUISH YACHTS

Two hulls of the VQ54 are now under construction at Vanquish Yachts.

Vanquish Yachts in the Netherlands has started construction on two hulls of its VQ54.

The model is an evolution of the VQ48 and is intended to be a personal yacht as well as an oversized tender for a superyacht. One of the first owners plans to use the VQ54 as “the ultimate party boat for Ibiza,” in Spain’s Balearic Isles, according to the builder.

The Vanquish VQ54 has MAN i6-800 diesel engines and a top speed of more than 45 knots. She also has a tender garage for a Williams 285 Turbojet, giving superyacht owners a powerful dayboat as well as a “boat-within-a-boat” stowage solution.

Guido De Groot and Studio Delta handled naval architecture.

About the VQ54’s interior: It has a two-person berth, a head and a galley for cooking meals during day cruises.

Monaco Solar & Electric Boat Challenge

Principality of Monaco turns spotlight on future energy sources

Monaco, Thursday 30^th March 2017 – It was at the first Monaco Ocean Week, organised 30^th March to 4^th April 2017 by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation in partnership with Rolex, that Bernard d’Alessandri, General Secretary of the Yacht Club de Monaco and Marco Casiraghi, the man behind the project, presented the Monaco Solar & Electric Boat Challenge being held 13-15 July 2017.

For four years now, the Yacht Club de Monaco has been giving space to energy sources of the future by organising a meeting for solar and electric powered boats.

Organised in collaboration with the UIM (Union Internationale Motonautique) and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, this event is a chance for engineering students to let their imaginations and talent run free. These are youngsters determined to put the event on the map, as a benchmark to raise public awareness of clean modern technologies in the battle against climate change.

Unique in the Mediterranean it is the first and only competition to bring together on the open sea, in one race area, solar and electric powered race boats. An endurance fleet race, timed slalom and one-on-one duels are again on the programme this year, testing boats to the limit.

“The Yacht Club de Monaco wants to build the future with this dynamic new generation of engineers who are enthusiastic and motivated to design and build the motorboats of tomorrow. It is very much in line with HSH Prince Albert II’s environmental policy. A reminder that over a century ago other pioneers came to Monaco to present their latest powerboat developments – a tradition that continues today,” said Bernard d’Alessandri.

For the first time since its launch, the event includes a 25-nautical-mile offshore course between Cannes and Monaco for a new class of boat, the YCM Offshore Class. Brainchild of the Yacht Club de Monaco, the boats will be breaking new ground in being able to take three people on board.

“With this new class, the ambition is to encourage universities and boatyards to design and build solar and electric race boats that can be marketed and sold in the future,” explains Marco Casiraghi, himself an engineer and the man behind the project.

Hamilton Island faces massive five-month rebuild

Hamilton Island faces a massive five-month rebuild but will partly reopen for business next Saturday after “all hell broke loose”. Exclusive pictures obtained by The Sunday Mail shows the “apocalyptic” scale of destruction to privately owned homes, luxury hotels and yachts at ground zero in the cyclone-ravaged Whitsundays.

Hamilton Island chief executive Glenn Bourke yesterday told almost 600 staff of the massive task ahead to clean-up and rebuild the island resort that has played host to celebrities Taylor Swift and Oprah Winfrey. The former Olympian paid tribute to the “resilience” of staff and hit back at “erroneous” comments on social media by some of 3000 stranded tourists when the monster storm scored a direct hit, packing 260km/h winds, on Tuesday.

Mr Bourke addressed a packed community meeting of the island’s nearly 2000 staff and 500 residents and business owners, quoting poet Dorothea MacKellar’s famous lines of “I love a sunburnt country” suggesting she might have added “cyclones and the atrocities we’ve all endured”.

“What we’ve already proven is we’re a tough and resilient community who in the Australian vernacular are always here to help a mate,’’ he said. “We want to celebrate the fact we had no loss of life, celebrate the actions of so many of you, and celebrate the resilience we have shown. What we faced was both terrifying and demanding in epic proportions. We know the structure of the roofs let us down, once the roofs were released, all hell broke loose.”

Hamilton Island owner Sandy Oatley, whose late dad Bob bought the resort for about $200 million in 2003 and spent $350 million on its redevelopment, has been on the island in the cyclone’s aftermath and guaranteed no staff will lose their jobs.

Airlines will resume up to two flights a day from next Saturday for the peak Easter holiday period. Luxury Qualia resort will be shut down for two months and be completely refurbished with its hotels fully occupied and fully operational by August in the week before Race Week.

Nikki Phillips, the island’s longest-term resident of 35 years, said the Whitsunday island resort had been through fires, airline strikes, bankruptcy and more than eight cyclones since it was built by developer Keith Williams. “This will be our biggest test yet. We will come back bigger and better than ever,” she said.
