Bella Mente Racing

Bella Mente Racing, led by owner/driver Hap Fauth, launched its 2017 campaign season with a major victory this week, winning IRC Overall, CSA Overall and CSA 1 at the RORC Caribbean 600 in Antigua; The team took home the coveted RORC Caribbean 600 Trophy for the IRC win as well as the Bella Mente Trophy, the team’s namesake award, for being the first IRC yacht to finish that is wholly manually powered.

The 600-mile offshore race hosted a record number of competitors for its 2017 edition, with over 80 yachts hitting the waters off Antigua, but it was the battle between Bella Mente and rival Maxi 72 Proteus that took the spotlight. The yachts dueled up until the very end, with the lead switching hands on several occasions. After over two days at sea, Bella Mente ultimately prevailed, crossing the finish line on Wednesday, February 22 at 4:51 p.m. (AST), ahead of Proteus.

“This is such an important event for our campaign each year so it was just the best to be able to come back swinging,” said Fauth adding that this year’s RORC Caribbean 600 win was exceptionally sweet for the team, which came to the event last year hoping to defend its 2015 IRC Overall win, but were forced to retire halfway into racing due to keel troubles. “We’re looking forward to the rest of our 2017 season and ultimately the Rolex Maxi 72 World Championships in Sardinia. That is what the whole season is focused on from here.

“It was a very hard fought win. Over the course of the race, the team performed 85 sail changes and all but one were executed perfectly. The crew gave a 120 percent and we got a victory out of it – a crew and afterguard-driven victory.”

The 600-mile race circumnavigates 11 Caribbean islands, starting its fleet off Fort Charlotte in Antigua and then taking it north up to Barbuda and around Nevis, St. Kitts, St. Eustatius, Saba, St. Barth and St. Martin before heading south for Guadeloupe. From there, the fleet returns to Barbuda and rounds Redonda before finishing back in Antigua.

“Our playbook was pretty extensive for this race with this being our fifth RORC Caribbean 600 racing Bella Mente, however it was based on the trade winds blowing as they normally do this time of year,” said the team’s offshore helmsman Mike Sanderson adding that though the RORC Caribbean 600 racecourse was the same as previous years, the fleet experienced a completely different wind direction, which changed the tactics and dynamic onboard. That, coupled with intense competition with Proteus, made for an extremely tough race. “This year the wind conditions did a 180 in comparison to previous years, which made for an entirely different race. For me, that was the best part of this year’s event. It’s always great to have a new challenge because it means we really have to do our homework to prepare for the race. When we got out there on the course, everything looked so different going around the track even though we were in familiar surroundings.”

Tactician Terry Hutchinson added, “It was an absolute battle all the way through. Proteus got the better of us in the pre-start and on the first leg up to Barbuda, but we did a good job of keeping it close, and one rain shower later we were bow-to-stern with the Maxi 72. For the next 450 miles we were tied to the hip. Proteus held the lead through to La Désirade (off Guadeloupe), but when we started on the 90-mile leg back to Barbuda, Bella Mente’s upwind speed shined and we were able to slip around Proteus and extend. From Barbuda to the finish we were constantly looking over our shoulder; our lead never felt big enough and we were preparing for one more parking lot with no breeze on the racecourse ahead. In true Bella Mente form, a couple of slick sail changes at the end of our 53 hours on the water got us across the finish line.”

When asked how he thought the team performed for their first event of the season, Hutchinson responded, “The team fared well, but we have a lot of work to do. The competition this season is very good, and so like in 2016 we need to apply a consistent process to our performance and development, and allow Bella Mente’s number one resource, our people, to perform.”

Bella Mente will compete in one more event in the Caribbean, Les Voiles de. St. Barth in April, before the yacht is shipped across the Atlantic to race in Mallorca, Spain for the Palma Vela in May. The team will then relocate to Corfu, Greece for the inaugural Corfu Challenge in July and return to Mallorca for the Copa del Rey MAPFRE later that month. The season culminates with its final and most significant event, the Rolex Maxi 72 World Championship in Porto Cervo, Italy in September.

International Maxi Association 2017

Another busy year lies ahead for the International Maxi Association, the body which for more than 30 years has represented the interests of maxi boat owners from around the world.

The 2017 calendar, open to owners of all maxi boats (ie 60+ft LOA), features two new events in the Mediterranean; a four race championship running through the season; another record turn-out for September’s Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup; the year concluding with a special running of the RORC Transatlantic Race.

The season kicks off with two IMA-endorsed events in the Caribbean. The RORC Caribbean 600 took place this week with Hap Fauth’s Maxi 72 and 2015 winner Bella Mente successfully fending off George Sakellaris’ Proteus, winner in 2016. Meanwhile George David’s Rambler 88 claimed monohull line honours for a third time. Rambler and the Maxi 72s now move on to Les Voiles de St Barths in April.

In early May, Maxi racing will fire up in the Mediterranean at Sail Racing PalmaVela, an event originally set up in 2003 just for Maxi yachts. As usual there were will be a strong turnout of IMA boats led by President Thomas Bscher and his Wally 107 Open Season, racing in the highly competitive Wally Yachts fleet: Last year among 11 boats, Jean-Charles Decaux’s Wally 77 J One won by a mere point ahead of Philippe Ligier’s Wally 80 Ryokan 2.

It will also be the first full fleet line-up for the Maxi 72s, where all eyes will be on the latest boat, Dario Ferrari’s Cannonball, the first Maxi 72 design from Botin Partners. Her crew will feature many who previously raced on the Maxi 72 Robertissima.

Joan Besalduch, Commodore of the Real Club Nautico de Palma, organiser of Sail Racing Palma Vela, commented: “I am pleased to welcome the Maxi fleet back to Palmavela, which will be the starting gun for the IMA’s Mediterranean racing calendar. The success of this event has been due to our collaboration with the IMA, sailing conditions on the Bay of Palma and the club’s constant work to try new things. It is an honour for the RCNP to be part of the IMA club, whose yacht owners are always welcome at the RCNP.”

Over 1-3 June will be a new event on the IMA calendar: the 151 Miglia – Trofeo Cetilar. One of Italy’s fastest growing events, this overnight race starts off Livorno in Tuscany, heads up the coast to Marina di Pisa, crosses to the Giraglia rock off north Corsica, then heads south, past Elba, rounding Formiche di Grosseto before finishing in Punta Ala. Last year the event was won by IMA member Pier Luigi Loro Piana on My Song.

Roberto Lacorte, President of Yacht Club Repubblica Marinara di Pisa, organiser of the 151 Miglia – Trofeo Cetilar, together with Yacht Club Livorno and Yacht Club Punta Ala, commented: “Including the 151 Miglia – Trofeo Cetilar among the four regattas of the IMA’s Mediterranean Maxi Offshore Challenge is a great honour for all the staff, for the yacht clubs, for the Organising Committee as well as everyone who has helped to achieve this result. Special thanks must go to all the owners who have participated in the 151 Miglia over the last seven editions, helping to make it one of the most prestigious events in the Mediterranean.’ Lacorte is also IMA Vice President of the Mini Maxi Racer division and owner of the Vismara 62 SuperNikka.

The 151 Miglia – Trofeo Cetilar coincides with the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta held in nearby Porto Cervo, where a strong turn out of the IMA’s largest yachts, including the Wally class, will be competing.

Another first for the IMA this year will be the Corfu Maxi 72 Challenge, hosted by the Greek-American owner of Proteus, George Sakellaris, solely for the Maxi 72s.

Maxi 72 Class Manager Rob Weiland commented: “The Corfu Challenge will be the first event to take place for the Maxi 72 Class in Greece. I have just returned from a visit to Corfu and Marina Gouvia and am impressed by the location, the facilities and certainly by the people.”

Weiland adds that at all the 2017 Maxi 72 events this season there will be five boats competing with the exception of the Rolex Maxi 72 Worlds where there will be six.

The biggest event on the IMA calendar will again be the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup (including the Rolex Maxi 72 Worlds) taking place as usual in Porto Cervo, Sardinia in September. This will feature the complete pantheon of Maxi yachts from 60+ft cruiser racers to 100ft Maxi and Maxi 72 grand prix classes, to separate classes such as the Wallys and Southern Winds and on up to the largest Supermaxis. In 2016 the longest yacht competing was the 49.7m long Dubois sloop Ohana.

The season concludes with the RORC Transatlantic Race. This year’s event will be special as it will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, a club with perennially close ties to the IMA. As a result it forms leg one of the Atlantic Anniversary Series and, for this year only, will finish at the YCCS’s Caribbean clubhouse on Virgin Gorda.

Across the season, IMA members also have the opportunity to compete for the Mediterranean Maxi Offshore Challenge 2017. This comprises four event series of which boats must compete in three.

Having won the 2016 Mediterranean Maxi Offshore Challenge, George David’s Rambler 88 is facing stiff competition in this year’s Challenge from the Hungarian Reichel Pugh 60 Wild Joe, which beat the American maxi in last autumn’s Rolex Middle Sea Race, the 2017 Mediterranean Maxi Offshore Challenge’s first event.

This year, following the 151 Miglia – Trofeo Cetilar, the Challenge’s third event will be the Giraglia Rolex Cup, organised by the Yacht Club Italiano, and running from St Tropez to Genoa, via the Giraglia Rock. This is expected to have a strong maxi boat entry, including Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones’ WallyCento Magic Carpet³, line honours winner in 2016 and overall winner in 2015. The Challenge’s decider will be the Palermo-Montecarlo in August. This is another event on the ascent with 40 entries in 2016. In previous editions of the race, Igor Sim?i?’s 100ft Esimit Europa 2 has claimed line honours no less than five times.

In addition to the series winner, officers and members of the IMA choose a Boat of the Year: The IMA boat that achieved the best performance during the season.

Thomas Bscher, President of the International Maxi Association commented: ‘2017 looks set to be a phenomenal year for the International Maxi Association. With a growing schedule of events, new boats being launched, new members joining our Association and, not least, the new affiliation with the J Class Association, I’m pleased to report that the IMA is very much on the ascent.’

Earlier this month, the International Maxi Association announced its new relationship with the J Class Association which has resulted in the J Class being able to stage its first ever World Championship, taking place in August in Newport, RI.

Oracle Team USA loses crew overboard ~ Video

Oracle Team USA came close to having a serious injury to crew member Graeme Spence when he fell off the front cross beam of the team’s new AC50 – a situation that has been feared as he passed between the foils, while the new America’s Cup Defender was sailing at speed.

Spence was crossing the platform close to the edge of the mainbeam when the AC50’s bows dug in as she dropped off her foils, and decelerated suddenly.

Spence was lucky to avoid both the main daggerboards and the rudder foils. He seemed to have the presence of mind to be able to get his body to the centre of the mainbeam before letting go and hoping that he didn’t contact the two pairs of foils.

Any time you see or hear someone go over the front it’s a real bad feeling,’ said OTUSA skipper Jimmy Spithill. ‘That time from when he goes over the front to when you see him pop back up on the surface and see the thumbs up, always takes too long.’

‘You’re very aware of everything that’s around you – the four foils in the water with you,’ Spence said. ‘I just sort of froze a little bit and then was quite relieved to realize I was out the back of it.’

The moment was captured from several angles by the on the onboard cameras aboard the AC50, and the team has released a video covering the incident.

The dangers of foil-strike are inherent in any man-overboard situation in the various America’s Cup foiling classes. Emirates Team New Zealand lost two grinders off their AC72 during the Louis Vuitton Cup after a mark rounding nosedive incident. Fortunately, then as now there was no injury.

There have been several incidents, not publicly reported, by the teams of foil-strike with sea life.

Rule changes were made in 2013 restricting the length of rudder foils to reduce the risk of crew injury in a man overboard situation.

Five Reasons to Try a Singles Holiday

Solo travel may be highly clichéd. But honestly, there’s no better way to discover yourself than travelling solo. So, try a singles holiday and read on to know how to get the best out of it.

Someone who has spent lots on alone time on the road by themselves would know that solo travel is not only liberating, but quite simple and not at all scary (as it may seem at first). Once you embark on your journey, you will have many eye-opening experiences; the kind that few others experiences in life can match!

As the travel industry is expanding and the market caters to all kinds of travelers and tourists, now is a better time than any, for those who have been skeptical of solo travel. In fact, look at it another way… think of it as you having limited time and money to spend on travel. Then why would you not customize it to your own individual preferences to maximize your satisfaction and try a singles holiday?

Here are ten reasons why solo travel an absolute must:

1.An opportunity to enjoy some “me” time

In the midst of recharging our phone batteries, we have forgotten about recharging ourselves. With solo travel, you have the necessary time and space to enjoy valuable alone time. Being alone on the road gives you ample opportunity to reflect on life and think ahead.

2.You create the itinerary

Some people are spontaneous adventurers while others like lazying around with a cup of coffee in the calm backwaters. Some people just like to check in at a luxurious hotel and sleep. Solo travel allows you to create your plans as per your needs and desires.

3.Planning is easier

Our individual bucket list shouldn’t be modified because the others with you have different travelling interests, budgets and schedules. When you are alone, these things are not an issue and you can head off to a gourmet dinner or a trip to the museum, at the last minute without having to check with anyone else.

4.Meaningful experiences

Travelling with loved ones and family is good, but sometimes they can be distractions from enjoying the true scenic beauty and adventure that travel has to provide. When it comes to making new friends or discovering places unheard of, travelling solo will let you leverage the maximum joy out of it.

5.You make new friends

Most first time solo travellers are gripped by the fear of being or feeling lonely. In reality, one may never feel this way, if they make the right choices. Dining at public bars, interacting with the locals, going out for street shopping and groceries, so much can be done. And when you are solo, you are likely to make a greater effort to mingle with others and forge new bonds for life!

All in all, when you try a singles holiday, it is a joy. It not only boosts your confidence but makes you a better traveller and gives you immense satisfaction in the end. Not to mention the fact that you end up answering the most important question : Why did I not do this ever before?

Local History

Jersey offers you a rich history to explore. Visiting the war tunnels will give you a unique experience. They were built by slave labour when the Germans occupied Jersey in World War 2. The entire complex, called Hohlgangsanlag, 8 took three and a half years to build.

At present, the tunnels exhibit a collection memorabilia depicting the history of life on the island through first person accounts. There is a very popular sculpture titles “Silence”. It was created by Paul de Mnchaux and is often noted as the identity of these tunnels.

Splurge

No holiday is complete without retail therapy. You can let loose and splash out with a great selection of store to browse through. You’ll find both high end stores and small local shops to choose from. Fish n beads is quite a unique place to visit as it specializes in funky jewellery and driftwood art. It’s located just outside St. Helier store and is run by a local artist.

The Beaches

Jersey beaches are quite popular and have been showcased in Hollywood movies endless times. There is a wide collection to choose from. Beauport Bay is quite nice yet isn’t too crowded. If you are a lover of huge crowds, St. Brelade’s Bay will appeal to you more. It is more crowded than the other beaches as there are some really adventurous water sports that one can try out. Paddle boarding, beach volleyball, traditional pedalos: There’s everything on the table.

Sun, surf and sand. Shopping, frolick and nightlife. Jersey has everything for the modern traveller who is looking for an escape from their mundane routine. In case you have had enough of the coast, you can head to the neolithic tombs and castles.

Things to with kids for free in Cambridge

Cambridge has earned acclaim as one of the two most famous university cities in the UK, with Oxford as its counterpart. Its famous university was established in the 13th century and since then it has produced some of the brightest scholars and academicians in the world. Its location at a distance of just about 60 miles from London makes it a popular destination for a day or weekend trip. Apart from its many famous colleges (31 of them) and its world famous University, there are plenty of other attractions to explore in Cambridge.

There is a good choice of hotels near Cambridge station to choose from in terms of accommodation. If you want to stay close to the city centre the hotels near Station Road are ideal as they are close to the business and leisure venues in the city. For those travelling on a budget there are plenty of free things to do in Cambridge that include the following:

Humphry Memorial Museum in CambridgeExplore its museums

The museums at Cambridge are some of the best in the UK and cover a wide range of areas ranging from archaeology to arts, science to culture. And thanks to Cambridge University, most of the museums do not charge an admission fee. They are a great way to spend a leisurely afternoon exploring the many exhibits and artefacts on display.

Enjoy the amazing natural beauty

There is an incredible amount of natural beauty to be found in Cambridge. One such place is Paxton Pits Nature Reserve, which is located on the periphery of St Neots, and is out of the best natural reserves in the area. Paxton Pits was formerly a working quarry and now it offers a diverse range of habitats that have made it ideal for a wide variety to wildlife to thrive there. It houses some of the best nature trails that are perfect for hikers and a number of bird feeding stations scattered along the area. And visitors can also catch a glimpse of the shy and elusive otters to be found in the area.

Try kite flying

Although Cambridgeshire cannot really lay claim to having anything exceptional in the way of hills, they do have Gog Magog. It is an area that is well known for its gusty winds. So on a sunny day you could try your hand at the traditional sport of kite flying in the area. Gog Magog Downs are to be found towards the southern part of the city, and are a great place to spend time with the kids flying kites.

Fliying KitesEnjoy the Bumps

One of the more unique traditions in Cambridge is the annual tradition of the bumps, two to be exact. In the month of May, there is the University Bumps and in July there is the Town Bumps. If you are left scratching your head trying to figure out what the bumps are – well, they actually are a rather frenzied rowing race, where the boats try to bump those at the front of them to try to move ahead!

Tread in the steps of Oliver Cromwell

Oliver Cromwell was a rather controversial and enigmatic figure who overthrew the monarchy and declared himself Lord Protector, while trying to convert England to a republic. He was born in Huntingdon and stayed at St Ives and Ely. There is the Cromwell Museum to be found in Huntingdon with his former home in Ely converted to a Tourist Information Centre. Cromwell himself graduated from Cambridge University. It is rumoured that his head lies buried at Sidney Sussex College and it is said that his spirit still haunts the place. You could learn more about the life and times of Cromwell with a visit to the museum. And there is no admission fee charged.

Enjoy a free gig

If you have a thing for music, how about enjoying a free concert on a Friday afternoon! While there is no free lunch, there definitely is a free lunchtime gig to enjoy. During term time drop in at Kettle’s Yard, where you will see some of the best musical talents from the University perform for free. All you need to do is pay for the meal.

Visit the Fitzwilliam Museum

If you want to keep the kids busy and out of mischief, take them on the first Saturday of the month to the Fitzwilliam Museum. The museum hosts its Family Welcome Point on every first Saturday of a month. The kids are given a free pack of drawing materials and there are plenty of activities as well as trails to keep them occupied. A great place to spend the afternoon with the family!

Fitzwilliam MuseumExplore Holme Fen

All those rumours you might have heard about Cambridgeshire sinking can be cleared up with an actual visit to Holme Fen that is a part of the Great Fen Project. There you will find ample evidence that proves the fact that a certain section in indeed sinking. The posts that once lay buried deep into the peaty soil at the top are now 15 feet above, as a consequence of the fens being drained.

Find your way through a maze

Have you ever navigated a maze or labyrinth successfully? If you have not, then take the kids along for an amazing experience to explore Hilton Village’s famous Turf maze! It is 55 feet in diameter and there is a pillar in the centre. It is modelled along the lines of the labyrinth at Chartres Cathedral and is an exciting experience for the kids to try and work out a way to reach the centre.

Take the kids to the skate park

If the kids are fond of skateboarding, take them along with a skateboard to Jesus Green Skatepark, where there a number of obstacles both for beginners and experts. It is an outdoor skating park and they do not charge an admission fee.

Swift Trawler 30 for sale in Sydney
All Swift Trawlers powered by Beneteau feature a long list of superior qualities. But it’s the speed, comfort, stability and fuel efficiency working in perfect harmony which is the real secret behind Beneteau’s Swift Trawler series. It’s what makes the trawler truly transformed.

Swift speed

The Swift Trawler features the speed other trawlers might brag about, but with a style and efficiency that could only come from Beneteau. The sleek, semi-planing hull designed to cut through the waves with a minimal resistance is in perfect union with the Swift Trawler’s robust engine, allowing it to deliver maximum performance.

Swift comfort

All trawlers, by their nature, have plenty of room and a steady ride. This reflects their working heritage where optimal space and stable footing were a necessity. Beneteau goes a step beyond. We’ve used our experience in designing sailing, as well as power vessels, to transform the trawler.

Swift stability

The same Swift Trawler hull that delivers effortless speed also delivers unsurpassed stability and easily manoeuvred direction.

Swift efficiency

In a time of rising fuel costs, economy has never been more important when choosing a trawler. Beneteau chose the most fuel-efficient as well as the most environmentally green engines available for every one of the Swift Trawler range, giving your family many more memories per tank.

Zhik Xeflex

This radiant barrier mid-layer nearly defies description.

How do you make a water resistant garment that really breathes, yet reflects your own body heat back to you? Where do you find a compression resistant and extremely insulating filling that is nowhere near as bulky as the Michelin Man, yet gives you that kind of warmth and comfort?

Well it started with the notion that a mid-layer had to be crazy warm. To do this, we deployed our proprietary Xeflex® fabric to work hand in hand with the vertically lapped filling and thereby utilise two of the main elements in thermal dynamics. It is an ingenious composite construction that fulfils the main requirements of lightweight, water-resistance, breathability and extreme warmth easily and effectively.

As with all Zhik® products, the story did not end there. We used an asymmetric zip location on the jacket, so it is not directly behind the one on your outer layer. Our revolutionary, and totally hydrophobic Avlare® was used the cuffs, meaning you also stop any water sneaking down your arms, or shooting up your legs as you move about.

The combination of the two technologies working together also means that whilst there is a significant reduction in heat loss, the drape, stretch or breathability of the fabric have not been compromised either, so it is extremely comfortable.

And as the apparent wind builds, it won’t compress to nothing, so you retain all the thermal benefits when you need them the most.

Ultimately, it all means you can use your Xeflex® garments across an extremely broad range of conditions and get the maximum performance from both your base and outer layers.

See zhik.com for all that the market leader has to offer anyone looking for gear that is totally Made For Water®.
